Why should Obama apologize for "best looking attorney general" remark?

Why should Obama apologize for "best looking attorney general" remark?

These days it is very common to spark a controversy over nothing. The latest is the US President Barrak Obana calling on April 4 the California Attorney General Kamala Harris “the best looking attorney general.”  But what is bad, sexist or offensive in the remark?

What he had said was: “You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake.  She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country — Kamala Harris is here.”

Is calling a woman as the "best looking" an offence? Is she not the "best looking" that it should be taken as an offence? Is being a "good looking" something to feel ashamed and bad about it for a woman? If a woman is beautiful, does calling her so sexist and offensive?
Do we not take pride in calling young men as a very smart, handsome young, a most eligible bachelor or spinster? Our magazines are every other day replete with declaring our women and men as the "most desirable" individuals. Does it amount to something abusive of the individual?

And what for did Mr. Obama apologise then?
